Fall visitors heading into Colorado’s mountains are being warned to plan ahead as leaf-peeping season gets underway at Guanella Pass. Clear Creek County has installed temporary no parking signs along the summit of Guanella Pass Road in anticipation of heavy traffic and increased visitation during the fall foliage season.
The popular mountain road connects the communities of Georgetown and Grant and is known for its scenic views and access to high-elevation recreation. As autumn colors arrive across Colorado, the pass can attract large numbers of visitors looking to see the changing aspen trees.
Parking Restrictions Added for Fall Crowds
Clear Creek County Road & Bridge installed the temporary signs along the summit ahead of the expected increase in traffic. County officials are reminding visitors that vehicles should only be parked in designated parking areas, including established parking lots and pull-offs.
When using a pull-off, the entire vehicle must be positioned off the roadway. Visitors who cannot find an appropriate parking space are being asked to continue driving rather than stopping along the shoulder.
The warning is particularly important because Guanella Pass Road is only two lanes wide, with one lane traveling in each direction.
Vehicles parked illegally along the shoulder can effectively reduce the road to a single lane. That creates additional congestion and can make it significantly more difficult for emergency vehicles to travel through the area.
Illegally Parked Vehicles Could Be Towed
Clear Creek County is also warning that vehicles parked in a way that impedes traffic may be towed at the owner’s expense.
The county says illegally parked vehicles can create serious problems during emergencies. Emergency responders may have difficulty navigating a narrowed roadway and could be forced to wait for opposing traffic to clear before continuing along the pass.
With potentially heavy fall traffic, even relatively small parking violations could contribute to major delays.
