Colorado’s first major snowfall of the 2026-27 season could still be several weeks away for many communities, but historical climate records offer some clues about when the first widespread snow is most likely to arrive.
Snow can fall in Colorado during any month of the year at the highest elevations. However, the chances of seeing meaningful accumulation increase rapidly through October. Historical records show that the timing of the first snow varies significantly depending on elevation and location, with the highest mountain areas often seeing their first flakes weeks before the Front Range.

Colorado’s First Snow Varies By Elevation
The Colorado Climate Center has analyzed historical first snowfall dates from observing stations around the state. The data demonstrate a strong relationship between elevation and the timing of the first measurable snow.
At Climax in Lake County, which sits at more than 11,000 feet, the median first measurable snowfall occurs around September 20th. Meanwhile, Gateway in western Colorado has one of the latest median first snowfall dates in the state at November 25th. Along the Front Range, the typical first snow arrives during October, while many mountain locations see their first measurable snowfall in September or early October.
That means skiers and snowboarders watching Colorado’s highest peaks could see the first significant flakes well before snow reaches Denver and other lower-elevation communities.
An early September snowstorm at elevation would not necessarily signal the beginning of winter statewide. Colorado’s high country can receive snow while temperatures remain relatively warm across the lower elevations.

Denver Could See Snow In October
Denver provides a useful benchmark for the Front Range. Historical climate records from the Colorado Climate Center put Denver’s average first snowfall date around October 15th.
There is considerable year-to-year variability, however. Colorado’s first snowfall can arrive weeks earlier or later than the historical average depending on the weather pattern that develops during the fall.
Colorado Springs has a mean first measurable snowfall date of October 25th, according to the National Weather Service. The city has recorded measurable snow as early as September 3rd, when 4.2 inches fell in 1961. Its latest first measurable snowfall occurred on December 31st, 2021.
Pueblo generally waits even longer. The National Weather Service lists November 5th as the city’s mean date for its first measurable snowfall. However, measurable snow has been recorded there as early as September 9th.

What Could Fall 2026 Look Like?
The larger-scale weather pattern adds another layer of uncertainty to the forecast for this fall.
NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center has identified a strengthening El Niño pattern heading into the 2026-27 winter. Its seasonal outlooks can provide information about broad temperature and precipitation probabilities, but they cannot predict the exact date of an individual snowstorm.
That distinction can be particularly important in Colorado. A warmer-than-average seasonal outlook does not prevent an individual cold front from producing significant snow, while a favorable winter pattern does not guarantee an early-season snowstorm.

October Is The Month To Watch
Based on Colorado’s historical climate record, October is the month to watch for the first major widespread snowfall, particularly across the Front Range and mountain communities.
The highest elevations could see a significant storm during September or early October, while Denver, Colorado Springs and other lower-elevation communities are more likely to wait until October or November.
A specific storm cannot be reliably predicted this far in advance. Once weather models begin consistently identifying a strong cold front or winter storm, forecasters will have a much clearer picture.
Based on Colorado’s historical climate data, mid-to-late October is the most likely window for the first major snow event affecting a large portion of the state.
