Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument in southern Arizona has been officially certified as a Dark Sky Park by the National Park Service and DarkSky International, recognizing the site’s exceptional night sky quality and opening the door to expanded astronomy programming for visitors.
The designation highlights the monument’s position in the remote Sonoran Desert, where light pollution is minimal and views of the night sky remain largely unobstructed. Superintendent Raquel Montez called the recognition a reflection of both conservation values and infrastructure improvements made to support the surrounding natural environment.
“Protecting the monument’s night environment honors a landscape where the stars have guided and inspired early peoples for generations and continue to shape our understanding of this place today.” – Superintendent Raquel Montez
The park received support throughout the certification process from the International Sonoran Desert Alliance, Western National Parks, and DarkSky Southern Arizona. Officials say the monument will continue collaborating with those partners on future dark sky visitor programming. A celebration is planned for winter 2027, with details to be announced.
Organ Pipe joins more than 400 locations worldwide that have earned the designation through DarkSky International’s Places Program, a voluntary initiative founded in 2001 that encourages parks, communities, and protected areas to adopt responsible lighting practices and invest in public education around light pollution.
