Berthoud Pass, Colorado — Berthoud Pass is perhaps Colorado’s most famous abandoned ski area. Its tough terrain and rugged environment created a passionate fanbase. But financial issues led to its closure in 2003.

Following its closure, the pass was at risk of being cut off due to the dangers it presented. While backcountry skiers gravitated to the area following the ski area’s closure, many arrived unprepared, leading to dangerous situations. New parties also considered a takeover of the lease, which could have cut off public access.

These are the reasons why Friends of Berthoud Pass was created in 2003. Over the past 22 years, they’ve helped increase avalanche education in the community, likely leading to less dangerous outcomes on the snow.

In the latest episode of Peaks & Passages by FlyFlow Gear, the history and legacy of Friends of Berthoud Pass are analyzed. It dives into the group’s history and features some sweet shredding footage.
