Last Friday, Grand Targhee Resort in Alta, Wyoming opened its long-awaited lift-serviced expansion onto Peaked Mountain.
Thanks to over one hundred inches of snow so far this season, they rapidly opened their new six-hundred-acre terrain pod, which grows their trail network by 30%. The peak was previously serviced by their snowcats.
It is serviced by the Colter Lift, which is a Doppelamyr six-pack chairlift. The lift travels 1,815 vertical feet up Peaked Mountain and can carry nearly 2000 skiers per hour.
Geordie Gillett, who is the General Manager of Grand Targhee, described the reasoning for opening the expansion in a public press release:
“Every decision we make at Targhee is focused on making our mountain experience more enjoyable for our skiers and riders. I am proud of the effort our team has put into making this dream a reality. It feels appropriate to announce the opening of the new lift and terrain on [the day after] Thanksgiving. We are so grateful for the opportunity to open this amazing skiing and riding to the public and we are grateful for the extraordinary efforts of so many amazing employees over the years.”
The 600-acre Peaked Mountain has a mix of wide-open groomers, steep chutes, and expansive glades. When conditions permit, it also gives skiers and riders access to some of Wyoming’s most challenging terrain.
The mountain features intermediate, advanced, and expert runs. There is also a backcountry entry point on the skier’s left of the Rolling Thunder Trail.
The Colter terrain can be accessed from the Sacajawea chairlift and then taking the skiers right onto the Rendezvous and Ermine trails.
