Utah — Angels Landing is not for the faint of heart.
The strenuous 5.4-mile round-trip trail is known for its steep switchbacks and cliffs. While many are able to hike it without any issue, it has resulted in the deaths of at least 19 people due to the fact that falling isn’t a good idea.
Because of these dangers, Angels Landing has become much more restrictive in recent years. Since April 2022, a reservation is now required to hike the last portion of the trail. Applying for one costs $6 each time, plus $3 if you actually secure a permit.
PeakRankings, which has branched out into national park reviews, described the process of conquering the hike. Perhaps the most challenging part? Securing the permit and then getting to the hike on time.
Doing your research for your hike is important. If anything raises your eyebrows while watching PeakRankings’ video, it may be best not to try it. There are many quality hikes at Zion. If the last part is what scares you, it’s perfectly acceptable to just hike to Scout Lookout, where the park ranger checks people to see if they have a reservation to go past there.
Ultimately, Angels Landing should be attempted only by tenured, in-shape hikers. Not being afraid of heights also helps, though you may develop a new fear of them on this journey.
