Greenville Junction, Maine — Despite its difficult 21st century, Big Moose Mountain has a lot of things going for it. It’s got varied terrain, remarkable views, and is affordable. However, there isn’t a lot going on there in the summer. In an attempt to change that, work is underway on a new experience for hikers in the summer and ski tourers in the winter.
Over the past few weeks, Friends of the Mountain (which operates the ski area under a lease) has shown its progress on a new hiking trail. This will connect the lower and upper mountains to Mirror Pond, a quaint spot that gives some impressive views. Unfortunately, this spot had been previously hard to reach.
From the base lodge to the pond and back, the round trip will be about 2.8 miles. The hike will also connect to the summit of Big Moose. This spot will also be available to use for uphill skiers during the winter.

Over the past few years, the current operators have been raising money to purchase the ski areas from its current owner (James Confalone). His actions left the ski area in rough shape and even forced it to close for a period. However, the non-profit group has been working to restore Big Moose to its former glory. According to The Piscataquis Observer, the group is in talks with the owner on a purchase and sale agreement.
Local officials are also looking into fixing up the road. County commissioners are seeking bids to fix the road culverts on the access roads. With the road reportedly in poor condition, this will lead to a smoother ride to the base area.
