Rescuers are trying to reach four climbers who fell on Mount McKinley in Alaska, North America’s tallest peak (20,310 feet).
According to a statement from the National Park Service a rescue operation is underway but hampered by inclement conditions:
“Four climbers from a seven-member climbing team fell in the vicinity of Denali Pass at 18,200 feet during their climb. Three members of the climbing team returned to High Camp at 17,000 feet after attending to their fallen climbing partners.
The National Park Service is actively responding to the incident; however, weather conditions on the mountain are improving and will soon enable helicopter operations. The extent of injuries and the condition of the climbers remain unknown.
This remains an active incident. The National Park Service is focused on rescue operations and notification of family members. Additional details will be released when they are confirmed and appropriate to share.”
It is unclear how far the climbers fell or the extent of their injuries. This is a developing situation and we will be sure to update when more information becomes available.
