After a recent spike in vehicle burglaries at hiking trailhead parking lots across Arizona, Yuma County Sheriff’s Office has issued a warning that just locking your car isn’t enough to dissuade potential thieves.
Deputies warn that suspects will often stake out these areas and wait until hikers are on the trail before breaking into the cars to pillage for valuables.

Yuma County Sheriff’s Office says that over the past two weeks it has received multiple reports of cars being broken into and valuables stolen. Incidents are happening most frequently in the mornings when more hikers are arriving and leaving vehicles unattended.
While locking your vehicle is important, it may not be enough prevent someone from breaking in. Here’s what Yuma County Sheriff’s Office wants you to know.

-Leave valuables at home whenever possible
-Carry important items with you instead of leaving them inside your car
Criminals often look for easy opportunities and target unattended vehicles. If you see suspicious activity, report it immediately.
