Mountain lion family @ Angeles National Forest

Around 40% of California is considered suitable habitat for mountain lions and the Angeles National Forest in Los Angeles County is no exception.

The following footage was captured by a trail camera setup inside Angeles National Forest last month and shows a mountain lioness and her kitten enjoying the spring conditions. Tune in for the full intimate 8-minutes and hear this mother lion calling out to her nearby male yearling and watch them preen and roughhouse in the Greater Los Angeles Metro Area’s backyard playground:

Interesting fact about Los Angeles, it is one of only two megacities in the world (the other is Mumbai) that have big cats living within the city limits. Incredible to see these apex predators living peacefully in such close proximity the LA’s estimated 20,000,000 residents. Learn more about staying safe in mountain lion country below:

California Mountain Safety Guidelines:

Mountain lions are solitary, elusive animals and sightings are extremely rare. Based on more than 250,000 GPS locations collected since 2002, it is clear that mountain lions prefer natural areas and attempt to avoid coming in contact with humans.

If you do encounter a mountain lion, make yourself appear as large and intimidating as possible by yelling, waving your arms, and even throwing objects in the direction of the animal. Slowly back away and allow space for the mountain lion to move away. Do not turn your back and run.
