There are quite a few hardcore ski resorts throughout the North America, like Jackson Hole, Palisades Tahoe, Whistler Blackcomb, or Kicking Horse. All of these resorts have at least some beginner friendly terrain, though, appealing to a range of skill levels. There aren’t too many North American ski areas designed for advanced and expert skiers only, but that’s exactly what Colorado’s Silverton Mountain is.
Silverton Mountain is home to just a single chairlift, climbing alomst 2,000 feet to the top of a ridge line. Skiers and snowboarders usually have to hike to their desired terrain from there, with hikes lasting between 5 and 45 minutes. Visitors are required to travel with a guide for part of the year, and beacon, shovels, and probes are required throughout the entire season.
The terrain itself is pretty wild, marking some of the steepest resort terrain in all of Colorado. There are plenty of chutes, couloirs, cliffs, and other wild terrain available to those looking to push themselves, and guided groups are split up by speed both hiking and skiing/snowboarding.
If the resort itself isn’t enough, the town of Silverton is easily among the coolest mountain towns in the entire state. There’s a ton of hiking and backcountry skiing surrounding the small town, and there are plenty of great restaurants and fascinating museums to keep visitors captivated. If you think you’re a hardcore skier, Silverton Mountain is the place to test your skills.
