Hiker captures his own shadow floating in the mist.

Imagine hiking high in the mountains on a foggy day when a figure suddenly appears in the clouds in front of you with a halo of light around it’s body. This could be a pretty overwhelming experience, but it’s not all that shocking when you know about Brocken specters.

A Brocken specter occurs when an individual’s shadow is cast into the mist, appearing as a floating figure. It generally occurs in the mountains, when a hiker or mountaineer’s shadow appears on fog, clouds, or mist with the sun positioned low in the sky behind them. It is truly stunning, but it’s just science. This hiker captured their Brocken specter on camera.

Seeing images like that, you can pretty quickly understand how people in the mountains hundreds of years ago believed they were having spiritual experiences of some sort, seeing a massive figure floating in the sky. Pretty wild stuff.
