New Hampshire โ The Granite State’s leading government officials tend to be pretty avid skiers. Sherman Adams, former NH Governor and Eisenhower’s Chief of Staff, was the founder of Loon Mountain. Humorously, he resigned from Eisenhower’s administration to “operate a ski lodge.” And that he did.
Another interesting example is that, in the 1990s, they held a ski race at Mount Sunapee between the Governors of New Hampshire, Vermont, and (eventually) Maine for a couple of years. It featured Vermont Governor Howard Dean, who later became known for that scream.
In the modern day, recently retired Congresswoman Annie Kuster tried to pass the SHRED Act, and NH’s current congressional delegation features tenured skiers. The last Governor, Chris Sununu, was the CEO of Waterville Valley and is frequently seen in a SkiNH fleece.
You can add Governor Kelly Ayotte to that list of avid skiers, as she accomplished an impressive feat last Friday.
On Friday, the Governor visited nine ski resorts across New Hampshire. Many ski resorts in the state are situated near each other, making it easy to visit other mountains in a short time. Her stops included Wildcat, Attitash, Bretton Woods, Cannon, Loon, Tenney Mountain, Waterville Valley (just in time for the last chair), Gunstock, and Pats Peak.
Here are some highlights from her day.
New Hampshire skiers and riders are being treated to great conditions lately, and that’s before factoring in the blizzard we’re experiencing. With the slick roads, it’ll likely be possible to only ski a couple today, not nine.
