Visitors to Whistler Blackcomb may have been hit with a unique scam, with fraudulent QR codes posted on pay parking terminals around Whistler Village.
According to the Resort Municipality of Whistler, these QR codes imitated PayByPhone payment signs, directing users to a fraudulent website designed to collect payment. The fraudulent website has since been taken down, but parking customers who scanned these QR codes are encouraged to contact their credit card company immediately to report the fraudulent activity, cancel their card, and monitor for any more fraudulent transactions.
Warning Scam Alert: Fake QR code stickers have been found on some parking meters and pay stations. When scanned, they lead people to a fake PayByPhone website.

The stickers were found in Whistler Day Lots 1 through 5, on Main Street municipal parking areas, and in the private Marketplace parking lot of Lorimer Road. The stickers were removed by the morning of December 28th.
Whistler does not use QR codes to collect parking payment, instead asking visitors to pay at the pay stations using coins or a credit card or through the PayByPhone website, PayByPhoneโฏapp, orย by phone atย 1-866-234-7275. Additionally, parking can be paid for in person at Municipal Hall during business hours.
The QR codes are believed to have been in place for a very short period of time, and as of now no victims of crime have been identified. Similar fraud has occurred elsewhere, including in Vancouver, British Columbia, and in Denver, Colorado.
