The body of a deceased individual was recovered from California’s Mt. Whitney by the Inyo County Sheriff’s Office on Monday, December 15th.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, a report of a possible deceased individual on the mountain first came in on November 12th, 2025, but the remote and hazardous location mixed with multiple storms that moved in just after forced recovery operations to hold off. Extensive planning and coordinations were conducted over several weeks.

Finally, on December 15th, after multiple helicopter-assisted and ground operations, the deceased individual was successfully removed from the mountain. While there are reports of a missing person in the area, the Inyo County Sheriff’s Office cautions anyone from making conclusions before positive identification is made.

Formal identification is currently pending with the Inyo County Coroner’s Office, and more information will be released as it becomes available.

While identification is pending, we recognize the difficulty of this situation and extend our condolences to the family and friends of the deceased.” – Inyo County Sheriff’s Office
