Maryland โ€” You never know where you can find a lost ski area.

In Maryland, where there is only one active ski resort (Wisp Resort), there are various abandoned ones. Perhaps the most famous one of the bunch is Braddock Heights Ski Way, which operated for two decades.

In a 2020 video by Avery Zucco, he explores the abandoned relics of Braddock Heights Ski Way. He discovers the old lifts still in place, the trails (which are surprisingly still in decent shape), a beat-up snowmaking pump system, the old snowmaking pond, and one of the old snow guns. Given that it’s been abandoned for 4 decades, it’s shocking how much remains.

History of Braddock Heights

Braddock Heights Ski Way opened in the early 1960s. The ski area wasn’t the steepest hill, and it had a modest vertical drop (a couple of hundred feet at most). What made it temporarily sustainable was its convenience to Baltimore and Washington D.C. A cool part of the experience was that a day ticket there was shaped like an apple. The ski area closed at some point between the late 70s or the early to mid-1980s, which was likely due to waning interest from the local inn ownership to keep it going. The site remains abandoned.
