Breckenridge, Colorado — In order to reduce its expected decline in sales tax revenue, the Town of Breckenridge is pondering whether to support the resort’s events more.

Summit Daily reports that the Town of Breckenridge is pondering how to bring sales tax revenue back up following an expected drop this year. One idea is to collaborate with Breckenridge Resort on events to generate more buzz and visitation in the local community. The proposal would allocate funds to the ski resort to create more widespread celebrations for these events. The thinking is that this greater buzz would lead to more sales around the town, increasing sales tax revenue.

These ideas were discussed during an October 14th Town Council meeting. During the meeting, the town’s finance department told the Council about an expected decline in sales tax revenue. The finance department projects that the annual sales tax revenue for Breckenridge is projected to be $33.5 million from 2026 to 2030. That’s a notable decrease from $36.4 million generated in 2023 and the $39.6 million in revenue in 2024.

Various members of Breckenridge’s Town Council believe that it’s something that local businesses would support.

“We’ve heard from some businesses, some frustrations and concerns,” said Dick Carleton, Breckenridge Town Council Member. “I think we’d like to see some efforts around events and just kind of livening in the brand (of the town).”

One potential event that could lead to greater collaboration includes the new Rockstar Energy Open. They want to see more visitation during the early season (November and December), so funding could be allocated to events around this timeframe. In the past, the Town helped cover expenses for the Dew Tour, which was a major event for the ski resort and the town.

While the Town Council floated some numbers, like earmarking $200-300k for the Colorado ski resort, an official number to be sent to Breckenridge Resort is still under consideration.
