Formed over thousands of years of rainwater erosion, Skull Rock is one of the most iconic and recognizable rock formations inside Joshua Tree National Park. Its name derives from its distinctive appearance as the massive granite boulder has two large hollowed out depressions that resemble eye sockets.
Located along Joshua Tree’s main east-west park road, Skull Rock is has long been a convenient pitstop for park visitors (parking spot just across the road from the rock). If you are looking to stretch your legs after taking in the cryptic geological feature, consider hiking the 1.7-mile Skull Rock Trail which loops through a wonderland of boulders, desert flora, and hidden nooks.
Next time you’re cruising through Joshua Tree, make sure to pull over and check out Skull Rock for a truly unique National Park experience.
