Enfield, New Hampshire — We’ve come bearing good news about Whaleback Mountain, which has faced many obstacles recently. Thanks to a grant, they can make a critical repair to the chairlift.
InDepthNH.org reports that Whaleback Mountain will be receiving a grant to repair its fledgling chairlift. The Upper Valley Snowsports Foundation, the non-profit that runs Whaleback, will receive $137,688 to replace the lift cable (haul rope) for its sole chairlift.
The chairlift has gone through various issues over the past few years. Last offseason, they needed to replace a bullwheel and the gearbox, which they ultimately did with fundraising and some help from New York’s Holiday Mountain. Further repairs were needed this offseason, which is why Whaleback announced in April that it needed to raise $350,000 to operate next winter. This grant will likely enable them not only to replace the haul rope but also to operate next winter.
It’s part of the over $8.1 million distributed by the Northern Border Regional Commission (NBRC) Catalyst Program. Also worth noting are the projects going on in Franklin, New Hampshire. Mill City Park at Franklin Falls, the region’s first whitewater park, will receive a $390,151 grant to build a campground for overnight guests. Located nearby, the Franklin Opera House will receive a $197,215 grant, enabling it to host more community events.
