Idaho/Wyoming — Do you remember the 21st night of September last June in Teton Canyon? Many people’s commutes were made a lot longer due to a road collapsing in Teton Canyon.
Many feared that it would be closed for months, even years. However, engineers and construction crews got to work, and a temporary detour on Teton Pass opened a couple of weeks later.
Despite one engineer thinking it wouldn’t work, it has been a viable temporary option that has allowed drivers to get through this hairy section. In the meantime, crews have been working on the area that was impacted by the landslide. To complete the project, they’ll need to close it again for a couple of days.
Last week, the Wyoming Department of Transportation announced that Teton Pass will be closed from 6 p.m. on Friday, June 27th, and reopen on June 30th at 6 a.m. During this time, they will finalize the repairs to reopen that section of the road that was impacted by the slide. The closure was originally scheduled for this past weekend, but they moved it back by a week due to rain that impacted construction work.
Connecting the states of Idaho and Wyoming, Teton Pass goes through the mountains to make the commute much easier. In particular, it connects the towns of Wilson (Wyoming) and Victor (Idaho). For skiers, Teton Pass is home to some great backcountry skiing. The pass also makes reaching Grand Targhee (which is only accessible by going through Idaho), Snow King, and Jackson Hole possible in a timely manner. Its peak elevation is 8431 feet.
