After devastating wildfire swept through Jasper National Park in the summer of 2024, park officials want to remind visitors that fires can still start and spread even under moderate fire danger and the ignition source can be something as small as a cigarette butt.

On the evening of June 18th, a Parks Canada Fire Crew responded to reports of a small fire near Edith Lake. The 1ft x 1ft fire was contained and extinguished quickly. It was soon determined that a carelessly discarded cigarette butt was the culprit. Please remember to do your part to prevent human-caused wildfires and use fire responsibly.

Jasper National Park Fire Safety Guidelines:

-Do not throw cigarettes on the ground. Put them out completely and discard them in a bin.

-Campfires are only allowed in fire pits or boxes provided by Parks Canada. Campfires must be attended at all times.

-Completely extinguish your campfire with water. Soak it, stir it, and soak it again until it is cool to the touch before leaving it.

-Campfires are not allowed in some backcountry campgrounds. Check the backcountry camping information or ask at the park visitor centre before setting out on your hike.

Small fire started by cigarette prompts Jasper National Park to issue PSA remind visitors of wildfire danger.
