June and snow don’t typically go together, but the high peaks of the Rocky Mountains occasionally see a light dusting throughout the warmer months. This weekend could be a snowy one for several areas in the Rocky Mountains, including Glacier National Park where more than a foot of snow could fall.
According to the National Weather Service, heavy wet snow is possible at the higher elevations of Glacier National Park. The chance of moderate to major impacts from snow is at least 50%, with total snow accumulations reaching up to a foot at and above 6,000 feet. Accumulations of 4 inches are possible down to 4,000 feet.
The snow could impact several high elevation locations in Glacier National Park including Going-to-the-Sun Road, which just opened to vehicle traffic earlier this week, Logan Pass, Marias Pass, Polebridge, and the backcountry of the Flathead National Forest.
Disruptions to normal activities should be expected, including in relation to driving. Widespread closures and disruptions to infrastructure are possible. Drivers should be prepared for dangerous to impossible traveling conditions, and power outages due to overloaded tree branches are possible.
