The Bureau of Land Management Oregon & Washington is advising boaters on the Grande Ronde River to remain alert of the potential for aggressive mountain goats between Meadow Creek and Alder Creek.

According to the bureau, boaters have recently been encountering two aggressive female goats in the area with their kids. The wildlife can be quite dangerous, especially when protecting young, so be vigilant to avoid camping anywhere where mountain goats or other wildlife are present.

If you encounter a mountain goat, you should stay at least 50 yards away and keep your dogs leashed. Never try to feed the animals, and urinate in the river or on rocks at least 50 yards away from the trail or your campsite. Don’t leave gear or clothing unattended.

If a mountain goat approaches you, try to move away slowly but don’t run. If it continues to head in your direction, chase it off by yelling, waving your arms or clothing, and throwing rocks. Report any aggressive wildlife encounters in the area to the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife by calling (541) 426-3279.
