Alaska — The Last Frontier is full of remarkable natural features, including rivers that are extraordinary voyages for white water rafting/packrafting. However, with this unique landscape comes its own set of hazards.
Last week, a large landslide crashed into the Lakina River at Wrangell St. Elias National Park & Preserve. The debris has impacted the water’s route through the river. With these changes come new hazards for those who want to go packrafting through it. The route is expected to change in the days and weeks ahead. Packrafting is where a person goes in a small and light inflatable boat that’s able to take on rapids.
Packrafting is possible at Wrangell St. Elias either solo or with a tour group. However, it’s recommended that first-time travelers go with a group. Click here for more information about packrafting at Wrangell-St. Elias.
Situated in southeastern Alaska, Wrangell-St. Elias National Park & Preserve is huge. With a size of around 13.2 million acres, it’s the largest national park in the United States. The protected land is home to the Rangell Mountains and a decent amount of the Saint Elias Mountains. It’s home to Mount St. Elias, the second-tallest peak in North America. The park’s facilities are open during the summertime, but tend to be closed for most of the fall and all of the winter. Some of the popular activities there include hiking on glaciers, checking out the historic abandoned mines, and kayaking.
