The search for a hiker who was swept into the East Rosebud Creek at Rimrock Lake is currently ongoing in Carbon County, Montana, with the Red Lodge Fire Rescue and the Carbon County Sheriff’s Office.
The hiker was attempting to cross Rimrock Lake while hiking Beaten Path from East Rosebud Lake to Cooke City when they were swept into the creek. The individual fell in around 12:15 on Sunday, June 8. The hiker’s companion reported the incident to authorities around 12:50 through a forest service trail crew in the area.
SAR members immediately responded and began searching the area while the Montana Army National Guard responded with two helicopters to search the creek from the air. Unfortunately rescuers were unable to locate the hiker.
“Our teams are working diligently to locate the missing individual. We are utilizing all available resources but unfortunately the high water makes visibility and access challenging. The terrain is rugged and remote and the safety of searchers is our primary concern.” – Sheriff Josh McQuillan.
Search teams are searching the area with ground teams and a drone and the Yellowstone County Sheriff’s Department helicopter is searching the cascades in the creek just below Rimrock Lake. Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact the Carbon County Sheriff’s Office at 406-446-1234. Hikers are advised to NOT attempt to cross the creek at Rimrock Lake during periods of high water.
