There are many of us who see a large cliff or hole and think “I want to throw a rock off that.” It’s incredibly tempting to see how far your arm can launch a rock or to hear it hit the ground far below, but you can’t be tossing rocks into the Grand Canyon at Grand Canyon National Park.
There are a few reasons for this rule. For one, Grand Canyon National Park has a lot of trails that wind deep into the canyon, many of which aren’t easily seen from up on the rim. Throwing a rock risks injuring people below. Rocks flying through the air also risk hurting the park’s abundant wildlife.
Plus, even if you don’t hit a person or an animal, you could dislodge other rocks below and cause a rockslide. If you’re ever tempted to throw a rock while in a National Park, just remember your Inner Ranger and put the object down.
