Rocky Mountain National Park‘s Trail Ridge Road is not anticipated to open over the upcoming Memorial Day holiday weekend as high winds, snow drifts, and other setbacks have made progress difficult for the park’s snowplow operators.
“Wind has been the main challenge since last week, causing low visibility, snow drifting back over cleared areas, and a thick ice layer beneath drifted snow. Snow and overnight freezing temperatures are forecast above 10,000 feet in Rocky Mountain National Park over the weekend.” – Rocky Mountain National Park
Trail Ridge Road runs the 48 miles between Estes Park on the park’s east side and Grand Lake on the west. 11 miles of the road travel above treeline at an elevation near 11,500 feet, climbing through the alpine to reach a high point of 12,183 feet. It typically opens around Memorial Day, but its opening depends on weather and conditions.
