With it being mid-May, most Montana grizzly bears have been out of their den for several weeks. While they technically aren’t true hibernators, Montana grizzlies will den for 5 to 6 months approximately between November and March.

As spring progresses, temporary site closures due to bear activity are not uncommon in Montana. The Crystal Cross Fishing Access Site located about 33 miles south of Livingston on the Yellowstone River is currently closed for exact this reason.

“The site has been closed as a precautionary public safety measure due to increased bear activity in the area. No conflicts have been reported.” – Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks

Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks staff will monitor bear activity at the area and reopen the site as soon as they can. More information on site closures and restrictions throughout Montana can be found here.
