Saddleback in Maine started its ski season with a moose on opening day back in early December of 2024. Video footage captured the moose galloping day down one of the ski area’s trails, with a skier following behind at a safe distance with their camera out.

It seems as though the moose are fans Saddleback, helping the mountain close out the season as well. A recent social media post from the area showed images of a moose wandering near the base of the mountain on the base live camera, taken earlier this week while lifts were shut down.

Saddleback reopened today (Friday) and will remain open through the weekend. April 20, this Sunday, will be their last day of operations.

The Maine moose population is the largest in the lower 48 states, with an estimation of 76,000 animals made in 2012. Their core habitat in the state is in the northern forestlands, with a diverse mix of hardwoods providing food and shade to the moose. Moose will typically leave the area if they feel threatened by a person, but they’ll occasionally respond aggressively. In general if a moose in changing its behavior because of your presence, you’re too close to the animal.
