April snowmaking @ Black Mountain.

Jackson, New Hampshire — While many ski resorts in the White Mountains are throwing in the towel, one ski area is pushing for several more weeks of skiing.

This morning, Black Mountain announced that they have making snow. This is an astonishing thing to admit, as not many ski areas make snow in April. In addition, they’re aiming to close out the season on May 3rd with a 90th birthday bash.

This weekend, Black Mountain will be offering skiing from the Double and Platter Pull lifts. From there, they will consolidate their efforts to the Double chairlift. From here on out, Black Mountain will be open Friday-Sundays from 10 a.m.-7 p.m.

As a New Hampshire resident, I’m pretty excited about this announcement. The lift-serviced New Hampshire ski season tends to usually end in mid to late April, as most gravitate towards Tuckerman Ravine after that. The last ski area standing in New Hampshire used to be Wildcat Mountain, which typically closes in late April, and even makes it to May sometimes. The last time Wildcat made it to May was during the 2014-15 season (fittingly ending the season on May 3rd).

However, since Vail Resorts acquired it in 2019, Wildcat locals have seen shortened seasons, as Vail Resorts have slowly tried to work out the kinks of an antiquated snowmaking system. In terms of this ski season, Wildcat Mountain is now closed due to snowmaking issues faced throughout the winter, while neighbor Black Mountain is making snow and aiming to make it to May. How the turntables.
