Excellent work by the Park City Police Department and the Deer Valley Ski Resort security team who worked together to identify and apprehend an alleged ski thief.
The 22-year-old suspect was identified by police using Deer Valley Ski Resort’s security cameras and ticket scanners. A Deer Valley skier reported their skis went missing from the Snow Park Lodge on March 12th. The Park City Police Department went through security footage of scene of the crime and found the suspect had removed the skis from the rack and put them in a black Subaru Outback in the parking lot. The suspect then changed his clothing to disguise his appearance and returned to the mountain to ski.
The police then used ticket scanning records and viewed footage from other days the suspect had skied Deer Valley. They discovered four other incidences of theft at Deer Valley dating back to April 2024.
“After months of diligent work, our Investigations team successfully tied together multiple ski-gear thefts from the past year, leading to the arrest of the suspect responsible. The owners of the gear have been notified of the recovered property. We want to commend our investigators for their relentless efforts, and thank the Deer Valley Security team, for bringing this case to a close. As always, we remain committed to keeping our community safe!” -Park City Police Department
Prior to arresting the suspect, police staked out his apartment near Brigham Young University where his Subaru was parked with the skis matching the description of the stolen ones attached to his roof rack. Police conducted a search of the apartment found multiple skis matching ones stolen at Deer Valley. The suspect allegedly admitted to stealing the Deer Valley skis and also admitted to stealing an additional pair from Brighton Resort.
The 22-year-old has an Ikon Pass and may have stolen from other resorts while using his pass. Park City police got in touch with the Unified Police Department who are investigating thefts at Snowbird and Solitude resorts. The suspect’s Ikon Pass history shows he skied at those resorts in the past year.
The suspect was booked at the Summit County Jail on March 27th and released. As condition of his release he is banned from Deer Valley.
