Monticello, New York — It was a great second season for Holiday Mountain’s revival, with a new-to-them chairlift opening, new trails being added to the trail network, and adding more snowmaking that allowed them to get the mountain open quicker. However, they were dealt a bad hand this past weekend.

Last Friday, strong winds led to an unfortunate series of events at the New York ski area. A utility pole, which was holding three transofmer, was taken down by strong winds, resulting in a fire. This fire spread to the snowmaking pumphouse and the generator trailer, requiring the assistance from local fire departments.

The local fire departments rushed to the scene and were able to extinguish and contain the fire to just that building and the adjacent trailer While there was notable damage to the building, it wasn’t a total loss, meaning that the pumphouse can be rebuilt and reused. The other good news from this situation is that the slopes were closed for the season when the fire occurred, meaning they aren’t planning to make snow anytime soon.

Work is now underway on getting the ski area ready for its offseason, which is when Holiday Mountain focuses on its Fun Park. Attractions there include a Go-Kart track, bumper boats, and mini golf. In terms of the skiing and riding experience, I imagine more improvements are on tap this offseason at Holiday.
