North Korea — We don’t hear much about the Hermit Kingdom, but they actually have a modestly sized ski industry. While its success is debatable, Kim Jong Un and the DPRK have developed a few ski resorts across the country to increase foreign and domestic tourism.
In the depths of YouTube, there’s an individual named Peter Fairlie who’s been able to gain access to North Korea television through satellite intercept technology that he installed in his backyard. It’s a great account to follow if you’re interested about North Korean culture and its communist government.
In a video shared on Sunday by Fairlie, the broadcast features a trip to one of North Korea’s ski resorts. The broadcast mostly serves to promote the Masikryong Ski Resort and introduce people to the sports of skiing and snowboarding. They showcase what a day is like on the mountain and what the guest experience is like after the slopes close for the day. The broadcast is in Korean, but you can translate the closed captioning by going to settings and pressing auto-translate. Ultimately, it’s a fascinating look at one of the most mysterious countries on our planet.

In addition, it sounds like more ski resorts could be coming to North Korea. NK Pro reported earlier this week that another ski resort is in development. This ski resort, which would be the third in the country, is being constructed in Samjiyon, near North Korea’s tallest peak, Mount Paektu. This area is considered to be Holy Land due to Kim Jong Il allegedly (key word is allegedly) being born on Mount Paektu. The slopes are next to military ski training slopes, which could be merged to create a singular ski resort. Click here for more information about that development.
