Chewelah, Washington — Snow grooming is a pretty fun job, as you get to be one with the mountain. You also have a front-row seat to some fascinating meteorological events on the slopes.
Last week, 49 Degrees North shared a few photos of snow rollers. The photos came from Scott H., a snow groomer at the ski resort. Several factors form these cylindrical snowballs. Wind pushes the snow across the ground or down a hill, resulting in a cylinder figure. National Geographic compared it to the natural equivalent of tumbleweeds. Typically, groomers roll out the snow, so it must be cool to see the snow doing the work on its own.
49 Degrees North has received 205 inches of snowfall so far this season. They have a snow depth of 61″ at the base, and 156″ at the summit.
