If powder snow was for sale, the rope drop would be like Black Friday at a box store. Throngs of anxious shoppers line up for green light and then its a free for all to get the best deals (powder turns) before they all get snatched up in a chaotic frenzy.
If you’re not familiar with the concept of a ski resort rope drop, its when a section of the mountain that is closed after a snow storm as ski patrol ensures its safe for guests to enjoy. A rope is hung across the entrance and when they the all the clear is finally given, the rope is dropped and skiers and snowboarders race to secure fresh tracks.
It’s competitive, its fun, there are definitely winners and losers and it makes for some truly memorable times. One of the most famous rope drops in the industry is at the top of Mineral Basin at Snowbird, Utah where you can reliably expect hundreds of skiers and snowboarders line up at the rope and go full bore once permission is granted.
It’s intense to watch, more intense to participate in. Enjoy this Mineral Basin rope drop.
