Steady Brook, Newfoundland — After failing to sell years ago, Marble Mountain is back on the market and drawing some interest.

CBC News reports that the provincial government is seeking requests for proposals (RFP) from prospective buyers that want to purchase Marble Mountain Ski Resort. In August 2024, the provincial government issued expressions of interest for potential suitors that want to buy the ski resort, which received two applications. Thos two parties, along with other bidders, are being invited to submit a RFP. People have until April 9th to submit an RFP.

In 2018, the provincial government issued an RFP in an attempt to privatize Marble Mountain. They received three bidders, but none fit the government’s vision. In addition, the COVID-19 pandemic changed parts of the proposal, so the provincial government took it off the market for a bit.

Marble Mountain is a decently sized ski resort. Marble features 43 trails (however, their mountain stats webpage states they have 39, but their trail map below states they have 45), four lifts, a vertical drop of 1700 feet, and 230 skiable acres. The province stated that the resort averages 65,000 skiers a year.

In terms of offseason traffic, Marble Mountain does get a bit of business during the offseason. Cruise ships coming into Corner Brook during the summer and fall help them get a decent amount of visitation. Tourists love the scenic chairlift rides that include a trip to an observation deck at the summit. A private party runs a zipline tour and aerial adventure course at the ski resort. However, the province believes that more activities need to be added to make it a sustainable business.

While it’s made headlines for being on the market, the province has remained clear that it’s not planning to close the ski resort. Currently, Marble Mountain has 41 of 43 trails open, and three of its lifts are operating.
