Moose @ Winter Park
Moose @ Winter Park

A moose caused quite a commotion yesterday at Winter Park Ski Resort in Colorado where it ran through the crowded base area. Skiers and snowboarders fled as the massive ungulate tromped around seemingly looking for an escape route.

While onlookers mostly laughed at the unusual sight, they may have been in more danger than they perceived as the moose showed many key indicators that aggressive behavior was imminent including laid back ears, raised hair along its hump and a lowered head.

There are no reports that anyone was injured but if you see a moose displaying these types of behaviors make sure to give it plenty of room.

Moose Signs of Aggression:

  • Laid back ears
  • Raised hairs on the neck
  • Lowered head
  • Swaying back and forth
  • Licking of the snout
  • Cocking of the head
  • Rolling eyes and ears back
  • If a moose reacts to your presence, you are too close.

What To Do If Moose display Signs of Aggression:

If a moose displays aggressive behavior or begins to charge, run as fast as you can and try to put a large object between you such as a boulder, car or tree. Avoid animals that are behaving belligerently or abnormally.  Moose that exhibit dangerous behavior towards people should be reported to Colorado Parks and Wildlife
