Homewood, California — After months of uncertainty regarding the future of Homewood Mountain Resort, it sounds like the California ski resort will be open to the public for years to come.

Yesterday, the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency’s (TRPA) Governing Board approved the revisions to the 2011 master plan. According to the Tahoe Daily Tribune, this approval followed six hours of public comments and deliberation.

Planned projects in Homewood’s updated master plan include a new gondola, a replacement of the Ellis Chair, along with building a mid-mountain lodge, a new hotel, and real estate developments.

A few years ago, the ski resort announced its intention to become private. However, this idea faced strong pushback from locals. Since receiving feedback from locals and TRPA, the ski resort has been insistent that it intends to remain open to the public. However, locals weren’t convinced, partially because of the decision to not operate this season.

Keep Homewood Public, the leading group warning the public about Homewood’s potential privatization, has been seeking revisions to the updated master plan to guarantee public access. Based on their official statement, it sounds like things are heading in the right direction.

It’s not clear yet what Homewood’s operational plans are going forward, but the California ski resort did previously say they plan to operate for the 2025-26 season if the master plan was approved. With these approvals, Homewood can replace the Madden chair with a new gondola, potentially meaning that this new lift could open next winter.
