Las Vegas Metro Police Department shared footage from a recent rescue to demonstrate how drones and technology can play a critical role in protecting and serving the community. The rescue took place this past Saturday around 5 p.m., when a hiker became stranded on Lone Mountain in the Northwest valley.
The 17-year-old male had gotten stranded on a large ledge on the east side of the mountain. The Drones as a First Responder (DFR) Unit managed to locate the individual, providing a precise location for the ground rescue team.
Once the ground crew had reached the stranded hiker, the DFR team used the drone to provide a powerful continuous spotlight, assisting in a safe and efficient rescue. Various methods were used to retrieve the hiker, though the Las Vegas Fire & Rescue credits the drone team as a major component in the success of the operation.
