Hats off to this kindly gentleman who responded to a neighbor’s call that there was a young deer in distress on a frozen lake in the town of Chassel in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Unsure of the thickness of the ice, the man cautiously approached the deer and found that it simply could not get to its feet so he decided to take drastic actions:

“The ice was just too slippery and she couldn’t keep her grip. I started by trying to get her to walk on her own but she kept falling. Then I tried decided to try pick her up, she didn’t put up much of a fight. I carried her back to shore where she was having a hard time walking on her own, she kept trying to go back on the ice. I decided to take her back to my house and put her in the back yard where I winter feed the local deer in hopes the other deer will take her in.”

While it is not recommended to manhandle wild animals, especially unattended fawns in the summer, in this instance intervention seemed appropriate and we hope the little fella a speedy recovery. Well done!
