Cottonwood Heights, Utah – Traffic in the Cottonwood Canyons is no secret. On a powder day, reaching your final destination can be a brutal endeavor.
Various factors are to blame for this situation, but locals have pointed out that UDOT’s tire traction policy is not being enforced. To summarize, during snowy conditions, UDOT requires vehicles to have a specific type of tire (3PSMF or M+S depth of at least 5/32) or proof of chains. Enforcement of this policy doesn’t happen enough and has become a common gripe among Utah social media users. However, that’s about to change.

Last month, the Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) Cottonwood Canyons teased some significant changes with an epic song choice and firm handshakes.
On Wednesday, it was officially announced that UDOT Cottonwood Canyons and the Cottonwood Heights & Sandy Police Departments are collaborating on a new program to enforce tire traction rules.
Yesterday, UDOT Cottonwood Canyons provided more details about its new tire enforcement program. Law enforcement will be set up below the mouth of the canyons to check whether people have the right tires. If they don’t, they’ll be asked to turn around.
Getting one of these stickers for your car doesn’t cost any money. All you need to do is head to one of the 66 inspection locations and get your tires checked out. The inspections will be going on from now until February 28th, 2025.
Ultimately, the goal of the sticker program is to get tires checked quicker so that these new checkpoints don’t cause additional congestion. For tourists, several car rental outlets, like Enterprise and Budget, will participate in the program.
