BRITISH COLUMBIA – On Monday, September 30, North Shore Rescue was called to an injured climber on the East Lion peak just north of Vancouver, Canada. According to North Shore Rescue, the individual was solo climbing/scrambling when they fell a significant distance, miraculously saved by some shrubs on a ledge.
“On Monday afternoon, NSR was called for an injured hiker near the Eagle Bluffs area of Cypress. As ground and air crews were responding to that call, a Mutual Aid request came in from Lions Bay SAR for a seriously injured scrambler on the East Lion. As a result, the first helicopter and rescue techs were diverted to that call.“
The subject was alone, solo scrambling/climbing the mountain. He fell as he was descending, without a helmet, down the mountain, apparently falling unconscious for 30 minutes. When he regained consciousness, the subject realized that he had been saved by some shrubs and called 911.
“NSR responded with helicopter rescue crews in the Talon Dauphin machine. A mountain rescue tech was winched a few meters above the subject and set up an anchor. Another rescue tech – who is an ER physician – was then winched in and provided medical care and packaging.”
The man was flown back to the Capilano Gate SAR station before being handed over to British Columbia’s Emergency Health Services.
