White Mountain National Forest, New Hampshire — Bear sightings are common in New Hampshire, as we even have an amusement park devoted to them. However, a recent stretch of sightings has US Forest Service officials worried.
Last week, the White Mountain National Forest issued a statement regarding near-daily bear encounters with humans in the Pemigewasset Wilderness area. This rise in interactions has been due to bears being able to access hikers’ and campers’ food. They are now advising that campers keep their food and toiletries out of reach of bears. The Pemigewasset Wilderness is a starting point for many popular expeditions in the White Mountains, including the Lincoln Woods trail.
If you’re visiting the White Mountains or any forest environment, you should be prepared for bear encounters. Stand your ground, stretch your arms out wide, and make a noise like you’re at a Celtics game (Ok, maybe not that loud). In addition, bear canisters, which can store food, are available at various locations, including the Ranger Stations (Campton, Conway, Gorham), the White Mountain Visitor Center, and the Lincoln Woods Cabin.
