Washington, D.C. — There are many notorious catchphrases in the North American ski industry. A few that come to mind include “Champagne Powder,” “Ski It If You Can,” “Ski The Cold Smoke,” and “Ski The East.” But none of those are as iconic as “The Greatest Snow on Earth.”
The phrase for Utah’s soft and dry snow has made it become one of the top destinations not only in the country but in the world. So, you may be wondering who coined that phrase.
The answer to that question is Tom Korologos. Tom passed away on July 26th due to heart complications. Tom’s legacy involves not only Utah but also the whole world.
Tom used “The Greatest Snow On Earth” phrase in a December 4th, 1960 article in the Salt Lake Tribune. The article dove into what made the snowy conditions in the Intermountain West so great. He drew inspiration from the Ringling Brothers’ “Greatest Show on Earth” phrase for their circus. The tagline eventually made its way to Utah license plates.
Besides the notorious catchphrase, Tom devoted his life to public service. Tom was an aide to several former U.S. Presidents, including Richard Nixon, Gerald Ford, Ronald Reagan, George H.W. Bush, and George W. Bush. Tom was the chairman of around 300 senate confirmations and was U.S. Ambassador to Belgium from 2004-2007, among many other achievements. Korologos’s work on Capitol Hill made him be regarded as the “101 Senator.”
