Back in October, Ski Ward in Shrewsbury, Massachusetts shocked the continent when it became the first ski area in North America to spin its lifts for the 2023-24 season. Since then, ski areas in Massachusetts have gone through trials and tribulations. Multiple rainstorms and warm weather throughout New England hampered mountains across the region, including in Massachusetts. This means that mountains that have been able to open have limited terrain currently available.
Over at Blue Hills Ski Area, the snowmaking mounds are currently minimal. All of the guests there were hiking, as skiing remains closed WCVB traveled to Blue Hills to ask people how they felt about this slow start.
Since then, Blue Hills has been able to activate its snow guns, as they are trying to open soon.
Over at Nashoba Valley, it’s a bit more snowy, but they only have 22% of their terrain open. WBZ chatted with Alan Fletcher from Nashoba Valley to see how they’ve been able to handle this challenging start.
While these scenes are bleak, cold weather this week will help these ski areas make some snow. Mountains like Berkshire East and Wachusett always have decent coverage, so this stretch will help them open up a majority of their terrain. There’s also the potential for powder in the long-range forecast, so let’s keep those snow dances going.
