Highly productive day for crews from the Colorado Avalanche Information Center and CDOT as they fired up helicopter and hucked “Turkey Bombs” out the door in an avalanche mitigation operation on Independence Pass. Here’s how the folks from CAIC describe the efforts:

“We had a successful day reducing the risk from cornice fall and avalanches for the CDOT crews working hard to clear Independence Pass. While these avalanches were triggered with explosives, they illustrate how a large trigger, like a cornice, can cause wet avalanches to gouge deeply and entrain a dangerous amount of debris. Thanks to the CDOT crews around the state for keeping our roads clear all season. They work long hours in often hazardous conditions. Give them thanks and thumbs up if you see them out on the road.”
