What’s in a name? Bogus Basin got theirs from swindlers who lived near the ski resort in the 1860s. During the 19th-century gold rush, the swindlers claiming that they had found gold there. They sold this fake gold to local communities but were eventually busted, and the Bogus Basin name was born. The ski resort opened in 1942, and kept the name.
In the 1990s, Jeffrey Jensen wrote a newspaper editorial to convince others that they should change the name of the ski resort. Locals and the management team disagreed with this opinion, and it has remained known as Bogus Basin.
