An iceberg roughly the size of London, England broke off from the Antarctic ice shelf on January 23rd, 2023.

Glaciologists have been predicting this event would happen for years, and have been paying close attention:

“A massive iceberg has broken away in Antarctica. Glaciologists with the British Antarctic Survey say it measures about 600 square miles, the size of Greater London.

It broke off from the Brunt Ice Shelf and researchers say they shot this video in 2019, having noticed a crack forming for a few years at that point. They called it Chasm 1 and continued to monitor it, expecting a breakaway event in the future. Inside Edition Digital’s Mara Montalbano has more.”
