Snow Valley isn’t the only lost Vermont ski area that’s currently on the market. Since its last ski season in 2017-2018, Plymouth Notch in Vermont has sat abandoned. Listed at $6.5 million, it’s among the best ski resorts available on the market: 800 acres (150 acres of skiable terrain currently) with room for expansion, a huge snowmaking pond with potential for 100% trail coverage, an 8000-square-foot base lodge, Vermont ACT 250 approval for 66 housing units around the base area and further development at the ski area, and more.
Last weekend, while I was in Vermont for a trip to Okemo and Killington, I decided to stop by Plymouth Notch to see the current condition of the ski area. I was pleasantly surprised by what I found. The ski area is still in great shape, and there was even a maintenance crew working on the mountain while I was there. Then came the highlight of the day: seeing the lift actually operating.
I got to speak with a member of their maintenance team, who explained to me that the owner who’s selling the ski area has them keep the property in tip-top shape. This includes mowing the slopes, cleaning the base lodge, and running their double chairlift, with the hopes of the buyer stepping in and having a turnkey skiing operation. He also confirmed to me that the ski area is still for sale.
Since its opening in 1965, Plymouth Notch has had a tumultuous history. The mountain has been known as Round Top, Bear Creek, and most recently as Plymouth Notch. Multiple proposals in the past had prior owners wanting to expand the ski slopes and real estate/condominium units, but the money has never been in place to actually make it happen. As I mentioned with Snow Valley’s recent listing, Plymouth Notch is in a hard spot to compete with the Vermont giants. It’s nestled in between Okemo and Killington and is also close to Pico and Saskadena Six. Running a private ski club again is a tough sell, as the Hermitage Club in Vermont does it better with nicer facilities and modern lifts. Having Plymouth Notch be an affordable ski area and allowing uphill skinners to shred there, could be the way to go.
