We all know about Alex Honnold’s incredible achievement in free soloing El Capitan in June of 2017, but did you know that there was a tense rivalry between him and another climber that could have ruined his claim to fame?

Climbers Crag goes in-depth about the events leading up to Honnold’s successful El Cap attempt, and how another climber nearly poached the title from him.

Check it out!

It’s pretty badass that Honnold basically said ‘fuck it’ and climbed the West Face before Dean Potter could, and then followed it up with the first-ever legitimate free solo of El Cap later on.

Honnold isn’t known to be overly competitive or brash, but I respect the hell out of him for protecting his legacy.
